Tel Aviv University was built on the ruins of the Palestinian village of Sheikh Muwannis. The university’s faculty lounge is the village mukhtar’s former home. At the corner of Arlosoroff and Ibn Gvirol streets, where the Century Tower skyscraper stands, a Palestinian village named Sommeil used to exist.
When activists from the Israeli group Zochrot set out into the heart of Tel...

A recent report by CBS show 60 Minutes on “Christians of the Holy Land” has received a lot of attention, not least for the embarrassing contribution by Israeli Ambassador to the US Michael Oren.
It is interesting that Israel (and its advocates) have been so concerned about the impact of a short segment regarding the challenges faced by Christian Palestinians under Israeli military...

I’ve decided that if the Spanish lesson gets enough notes, I don’t have to post one for a while. Last one got almost 400, so I don’t have to post one for a while. Maybe that’s how you should run your blog, too.
I had this like 5 day stretch when everything I was posting was getting like 100 notes. Then...

OH, “Your Daily Spanish Lesson” has now turned into “Your Maybe Once a Week (if I don’t have too much hw) Spanish Lesson”. I am horrible and don’t deserve followers.
That’s basically the title of my blog if you replace Spanish lesson with “Any posts at all”

At the South by Southwest Interactive festival in March, I attended a talk titled “Adding Value as a Non-Technical No Talent Ass-Clown.” It was given by Matt Van Horn, a 28-year-old executive at the social-media company Path. Path had generated a lot of buzz at the tech and media confab; it was recently valued at $250 million.
A crowd of about 100 was packed into the conference...

The quality of this blog has been shit recently. I apologize for that. When this semester is over, I’ll work on it sucking less.
Africans shocked by uncivilized antics of European... →
Africans say they have little hope that Europe will ever become civilized, after a week in which Spain’s King Carlos went on an elephant-killing spree and the Swedish Culture Minister was entertained by a racially offensive cake. “You can take the European out of the jungle, but you can’t take the jungle out of the European,” sighed one resident of Kinshasa.

Where to begin?
Arabs & Israel: For Beginners by Ron David - I believe this is the best book to start with for anyone. It is extremely concise and easy to read.

I had nearly given up on the question of the original manuscript until a year ago when I interviewed Lynda Martin, the sister of Toole’s best friend in high school. “The manuscript?” she said in a soft southern accent. “Yes, well I have it in my closet here at home.”
An excellent tale of literary sleuthing from Cory Maclauchlin in The Millions.

Yeah, and the worst part is that I know they won’t even read the goddamn books until the night before. I HAVE SERIOUS RESEARCH TO BE DOING!
I’m looking forward because all of the undergrads will go home and I can finally get all of the books out of the library I’ve been wanting to read but that they have been using for their awful 5 page papers about how “comic books make them feel culturally relevant.”

I just realized the perfect opening for a paper I turned in last week would have been the Marx quote Said uses for Orientalism. Crap. Instead, I blathered on for half a page about what I was trying to say when a short little quote would have done it all.
Instead of reading and working on papers, I’m finding images of books I’m reading so that I can make a currently reading thing for tumblr. Then I realized how much I am procrastinating.

In September 2005, a senior Wal-Mart lawyer received an alarming e-mail from a former executive at the company’s largest foreign subsidiary, Wal-Mart de Mexico. In the e-mail and follow-up conversations, the former executive described how Wal-Mart de Mexico had orchestrated a campaign of bribery to win market dominance. In its rush to build stores, he said, the company had paid bribes to obtain...

I should just become a cultural historian. It’s where my interest lay (lie? hold themselves in perpetuity?) and I like some of the stuff I’ve read in the field.
I’m still trying to determine if the blurb “the most relevant book by a geographer in years” is a compliment or insult.
Anyways, the book is good.
