I really hate the argument that “everyone makes mistakes” as a defense against saying something racist/sexist/transphobic/etc.

Yeah, people do make mistakes. The point then is to apologize and not defend yourself because then you’re just showing you’re a privileged ass who is not actually willing to move  beyond your privilege.
