Note 1: If you are undecided and are somewhat leaning towards a professional degree (Law, Medicine, etc) do it.

So, lets get a few things clear. Apart from STEM fields (and other professional degrees), nothing you actually learn directly in University is going to be at all relevant to your job. Nope, nothing. The history of WW1! Wow, that takes me all of 5 seconds to navigate to wiki and read it. Pretty much every single humanities field has been over analysed at an undergrad level and 50 more undergrads writing the same shitty essays won’t change that. You will never refer to that essay again.

Non-STEM fields ave incredibly easy prerequisites because the students are not actually expected to remember anything from the previous semester / year. To do 2nd year history, you need to have done some 1st year history. STEM subjects require you to have done an exact prerequisite paper, and will assume you know the precise content of it.

So, lets review what you get out of a major:

STEM: Actual useful knowledge relating to the solving of problems to either one right answer or one right most optimal answer. Critical and analytical thinking skills. A qualification which guarantees certain work applicable skills.

Non STEM: Critical thinking skills.

Lets look at a few jobs.

Non Stem job, Non Stem major: You have some critical thinking skills.
Non Stem job, Stem major: You have critical thinking skills, You have analytical thinking skills, you have a proven record of problem solving and lateral thinking. I will hire you.

Stem job, Non Stem major: *CV is thrown in the bin for being a skillless waste of time*
Stem job, Stem major: In addition to mandatory professional skills which are needded for this job, you have critical thinking skills, you have analytical thinking skills, you have a proven record of problem solving and lateral thinking. I will hire you.

Really, if you are undecided about a major, just pick a STEM one.

this is the dumbest thing I’ve read all day, and I read my student evals earlier. People hating on the humanities can fuck right off.

“The history of WW1! Wow, that takes me all of 5 seconds to navigate to wiki and read it.”

okay then

“STEM: Actual useful knowledge relating to the solving of problems to either one right answer or one right most optimal answer. Critical and analytical thinking skills. A qualification which guarantees certain work applicable skills.

Non STEM: Critical thinking skills.”

How is critical thinking not actual useful knowledge?

Seriously fuck off.

Fuck the fetishization of STEM majors.

Also, I dislike the idea that your ultimate goal in education should be gaining skills for a job. Yay, let’s naturalize capitalism.
