I’d reread A Thousand Plateaus! I’m reading the Embodiment of Knowledge alongside David right now.

I wouldn’t mind doing this up. And where I work for a bookstore, I’m sure finding reading mats won’t be too much of a hassle.

I’m down for Foucault/Deleuze/basically anything.

let’s make this happen yo.

I’m gonna go ahead and suggest ATP since spittingonhegel is already reading it (and HEY, DAVID, aren’t you too?) and fearandwar is down with Deleuze… two sections a week or so from here on out would have us done in time for the start of the fall semester.

I’m reading ATP with tinypapercuts and I think our plan is to finish before the fall so I’d be, in a general sense, down with this, provided no one minds I’m drunk all the time (like now) (heh)

I assumed that alcohol was mandatory.

What I didn’t like about the SF plotline was how neither one seemed to grow. They basically picked up from where they left off. I really think Marshall’s character needed to develop an identity separate from being with Lily. The whole pausing fight thing showed how the writers aren’t able to actually deal with real fights. Look at how they handled finding out about the sex of Lily’s baby.

Barney is becoming a really good character. I don’t like his current relationship but I think he has to go through it to get with Robin.

I can’t believe how much we have written about this show tonight.

That’s a good point too, Marshall was really just recovering from the loss and Lily seemed to just be learning a pretty basic life lesson. maybe it would have been better if they did it for another season or a half, and let Marshall have actually started to get his life back together

I don’t think i’ve gotten to the sex of the baby yet, but yeah even the whole environmental law issue was just kind of glazed over

I’d like to see Ted have more relationships with kids though, kids of women he’s dating, I thought that dynamic was really excellent previously in the show.

I also would like to see more topical stuff, the one episode at the high society party with Will Shorts and the like was excellent

hm yeah, I guess it’s testament to how good of a show it is, flaws and bad decisions and all. It’s very unique compared to most major network sitcoms in that the characters aren’t mere vehicles for jokes or so archetypal. I remember someone once describing it something like “the perfect balance of soap opera and sitcom”, I always thought that description was apt.

One of the best criticisms I’ve ever read of Ted is that he doesn’t grow. He keeps going from relationship to relationship without ever really adjusting or growing as a person. (This was in a cracked article, so take that with a huge grain of salt.) Still, I think it captures something about him. He’s looking for “true love” without ever realizing relationships are work.

The show, for all of the things I dislike, still manages to hit emotional depths pretty much no other sitcom does. I actually like the characters and do want them to succeed. It is the perfect balance of a soap opera and sitcom.

im about 3 episodes in on the current season so I believe where it’s at is that they both kind of want to get back together but haven’t yet

yeah i agree, they’ve really relegated him to a very dull roll now, his life is relatively sorted out except for finances (which is a terrible theme).

i dont understand why they were distanced from the other 3 in the first place, it makes little sense unless they were going to be phased out of the show, which I highly doubt

I find one of the show’s greatest strengths is the continual internal struggles each of the characters have, and i feel like they’ve really negated a lot of that for Lily and Marshall

Yeah the current season’s midseason finale was a doozy.

That’s a good point about Marshall and Lily. I think the whole her leaving him could have been played for better growth of the characters. I don’t like how they’re basically reduced to the role of parents to the group. Barney is also verging on parody pretty soon.

Sometimes I think that the show must only hire single writers because they have yet to really be able to grasp what a married couple is like. Either they have a massive fight they resolve by the end of the show or they don’t have any problems and serve as a guiding voice. Why not show how they’re having problems and let the tensions from fights go several episodes?

you’re talking earlier in the show when she left for San Francisco? yeah definitely as far as Marshall/Lily, which is why I don’t like the pregnancy dynamic, it further distances them. As for Barney (oops I guess its not Barnie, lol), I feel like he’s gotten better recently as he’s developed more emotionally, but it felt as if they ignored that concept for so long and then rushed it.

I’m not sure, never looked into the writing, but yeah, I think they always had that concept of Marshall/Lily as a chipper couple with no arguments (recall how they would pause arguments earlier in the show), though I feel like this is just a tool to avoid difficult writing focusing on martial issues. Which, going back to the San Francisco thing, I thought that (along with the airport waiting thing) was the best interpersonal dynamic between Marshall and lily, and it was continued for pretty much a whole season, and that was certainly I think the most interesting time for their relationship.

How up to date on the show are you? There’s stuff about Barney and Robin I don’t want to spoil.

I really think Marshall can handle great drama, but the show is afraid to use him for that. It just leaves him and Lily without much to do. They’re the two members of the group who have moved along in their lives and are being held back by their friends.

Robin-Barnie-Ted needs to be developed more. I think it does hit a good dynamic in the group. Marshall is way too underutilized. Zoey was just awful. It was entirely a plot filler with no real relation to the story. Lily is holding back the show.

yeah, i don’t know, you just know that Barnie and Robin are going to end up married, at least that’s my impression. if im wrong and it turns out to not seem that way as it develops, maybe it will interest me more

and im also kind of disappointed Marshall got the job at an environmental law firm, I thought the conflict of his ideals and his employment at GNB was a really great plot mechanic and they gratified it without any good reason

and absolutely as far as Lily, the whole pregnancy thing is really getting old, I wish they wouldn’t have even introduced it. i dont think that theme fits the show at all
